  • Samuella VI

For a second there was an utterly insance glance in the eyes of queen Sabrina but it passed quickly. Samuella could almost not believe it happened after she witnessed it.

  • Divergence in academia and the world of the workplace

Other students and I have reached the same conclusion that there is a gap between the world of academia and the world of the “workplace.” Not only is there a gap, the gap seems to be growing as well.

For new students entering the university for the first time might come as a bit of a shock, depending on the programme that is chosen. For me the “world of philosophy” at the faculty of the humanities was truly a new world to tread. Not all was uncommon, since the atmosphere that some teachers created did feel like primary school again (in the focus on learning for the sake of learning).

To paint a picture for those currently in business positions, when a lecture starts with ten minutes of tradional african music you experience something quite different from what seems more status quo at Universities that are more oriented towards practical education.

For example while at the University of Twente there were assignments in which creativity was stimulated by the teachers, the atmosphere was a bit different and the learners culture was all in all more oriented towards reproduction of knowledge rather than pure knowledge seeking for its own sake.

I cannot speak for other programmes and perhaps the long history of the University in Leiden makes it easier to overlook faults that you would have spotted at a University with less tradition, but traversing through faculty buildings does give the impression that life in Leiden is special.

Now there are movements on national level among Universities to preserve the humanities programmes, and it seems unwise to stimulate students to finish their studies as quickly as possible, I mean do not get me wrong it is good to graduate and ultimately students do study to graduate (although that might not be their primary objective) but there is something to say for “slow learning.”

Traditionally philosophical studies took a long time to complete and this seems fitting when considering that philosophical studies study human experience per se. Also when compared with academic life in medieaval time periods the life of the scholars were aimed towards prolonged study that continued for lifecycles.

In this light it is rather new that so much studies in modern universities are preparing students for life outside of the university. It is by no means a bad thing but it is a cultural change that has effect on the ways we experience “human” life.

If learning is geared towards speed something is lost. Ancient studies included physical exercise as well, this is not forgotten entirely in Dutch society but it stops after high-school. Yes you can continue study in bodily movement but it is offered as a specialized programme.

One can argue that it is not lost and that there are communities around student cities that offer physical exercise, and this is true, but these courses are not principally included in University curriculae.

Things like cooking clubs and other skills that are necessary to function as an independent human adult could be taught as well although academics would probably consider these skills not suitable for university environments. But if we consider that the menu at the humanities faculty in Leiden is completely vegetarian it makes one wonder who decides things like these.

Does this choice indicate that meat eaters are considered inhuman? Perhaps the dilemma is then most straightforwardly characterized as the dynamic between those who adopt a sedentary lifestyle and those who wander.

Interestingly there have already been altercations vis-a-vis students and restaurant staff. The restaurant inside the faculty of humanities is independently run. Thus when students want to sit at tables inside their University’s campus they are spooked away by third-party employees who have to appease the shareholders of the restaurant. INSIDE THE BUILDING OF THE HUMANITIES

  • Samuella V

So when majesty the Queen Sabrina invited Samuella into the yellow-plastered throneroom she was cautious. However it seemed that her reservations were ungrounded. There was no puffed up man waiting inside.

  • Samuella IV

And there was nothing sinister in this attitude for her. It was simply a way of dealing with the bare facts.

    1. Her mother was nagging her to get married
    2. She was too busy wandering around the greens of the splendid nature of Boze’s fields
    3. A husband, however well his intention, would put a stop to the carefree exploration ergo the necessisated removal of said husband

Also she had far too much time used on exploring whatever there was to be explored. It would seem like a waste to just do nothing with these adventures.

  • Smith and modernity

Smiths theory of division of labour can be applied to entertainment as well. Whereas in the past the centaur fights in the colloseum were the sole entertainment for the whole populus, in modern times this form of entertainment has been divided into at least two subdivisions. I can name the circus as the first, and association football or soccer in proper English as the second. Does this mean analysis per analysis is being applied to the structure of “reality” itself?

  • Samuella III

But these doubts could be arrested for now. Since there were more pressing matters. Her highness the Queen, Sabrina Boze IV asked for the presence of Samuella. Sam was a bit afraid that Sabrina would propose a suitor.

Sam had been secretly exploring the gardens for certain poisoins derived from dailys. If fate would put a husband in her path which she would not like to spend her aimless wandering with she was ready to sent the pour soul straight to walhalla.

Do you suppose Italians are inherently more passionate than for example the french since Italian has both “basto,” and “punto?”

    May God keep us steadfast.

  • Samuella II

But whether she would be able to find such a husband, who would not only be able to challenge her intellectually, but who she also could fancy, was a question that bothered her.

It did not help that the castle in which the family resided was a bit isolated. There were quint little residences of course, but when compared with the domains of other families there just was not that much social life in the land of Boze.

  • Magasin

Princess Samuella of the Boze dynasty was not a princess by choice. Tradition dictates that the spawn of the Royal family inherits the titles of the ancestors.

The same tradition also dictated the necessity of princess Samuella to marry before her 25th. The only issue in this plan is that no one asked Samuella what her thoughts about all these customs were.

To be honest she did not really know what her feelings about all these conventions were, but she did have a nagging feeling that ultimately if she would never rebel at any point in the strictly orchestrated play that would be her life she would die a untimely death through the slow but sure slipping away of passion.

Yes it would be terrifying to marry a man that only occasionally would be smarter than her. The prospect of one day finding out that her husband did not know how to handle cash was something she was not ready for.
