{"id":560,"date":"2026-03-17T06:23:35","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T06:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harmenscholte.com\/?p=560"},"modified":"2026-03-17T06:23:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T06:23:35","slug":"bayes-and-frequentists-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harmenscholte.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/17\/bayes-and-frequentists-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bayes and frequentists #2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the earlier post I discussed merely the Bayesian camp so today we will right that wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequentist statistics is helpful in that it enables to arive at general conclusions about a test group in a controlled environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can frequentist statistics be used to make decisions? It can and is being done for example in computer science viz. a-b testing for example in<em> intelligent interaction design<\/em> which is a discipline aimed at improving user experience vis-a-vis electronic interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this particular example Bayes would not have sufficed, at least not in its <em>normal form<\/em>. A applied methodology can be imagined in which <em>Bayesian strength<\/em>  is determined before and after a use-case for two or multiple interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>research<\/em> question would be slightly different from that of the frequentist scientists viz. <em>frequentists<\/em> have a straightforward method in testing whether there is a <em>significant<\/em> difference in user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Bayesian inference is designed to arrive at <em>degree of belief<\/em>  with regard to prior probability it is more applicable to individual use cases rather than coming to conclusions for a predetermined test group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hypothesis<\/strong>: frequentist statistics is used to draw general conclusions from carefully selected test groups, bayesian statistics is used to draw case-specific conclusions from historical data and particular context.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the earlier post I discussed merely the Bayesian camp so today we will right that wrong.
