Prescriptivism vs Decriptivism

Linguistic discussion considers descriptic and prescriptic attitudes towards language use. Correct me if I am wrong descriptists allow a broader use of language such as “to boldly go where no woman has gone before,” while prescriptivists consider the splitting of the infinitive “to boldy go,” as opposed to “to go boldly” as a improper use of language.
